Pet First Aid and CPR

Doggie! Doggie! Are You Okay?
Why Learn Pet First Aid & CPR?
   By Casey Brown-Farris

Part I – For Pet Professionals

What is shock?  What does it look like?  There are numerous causes
of shock in an animal including injury, infection, poisoning, and
exposure to the elements.  Regardless of the cause, quick action on
your part is imperative for the pet’s survival.  What are you going to
do?

Pet owners consider their pets to be their best friends, members of
their family and lifelong companions.  Pet professionals have a
devout love of animals, but are they prepared to help those pets
through a minor health crises or a full-blown emergency?  Knowing
the life saving skills and techniques of Pet First Aid is a very
important part of being a caring, conscientious, responsible pet care
professional.  Being certified in Pet First Aid and CPR is becoming a
more prevalent practice among pet professionals and pet owners
would be wise to inquire about their pet care professionals’
emergency preparedness.  Pet First Aid and CPR is the foundation of
every emergency and disaster preparedness program.

60% of animal hospital visits are emergency in nature and according
to the American Animal Hospital Association one out of four pets
could be saved if just one Pet First Aid technique was applied prior to
getting veterinary treatment.

Learning the skills and techniques of Pet First Aid are best learned by
lecture, demonstration and hands-on-skill practice.  All pet
professionals including obedience trainers, kennel operators, pet
retailers, pet sitters, dog walkers, veterinarian staff, animal shelter
employees, pet rescue personnel, pet groomers, EMTs, policemen,
fire fighters and any pet lover would benefit from Pet First Aid and
CPR training.

Prevention is best, being prepared is key, education and training is a
must.  When both pet owners and pet professionals do their part,
pets win.

Part II- For Pet Owners

Your pet had an accident!  He’s going into shock!  What are you going
to do?

Your pet is just like one of your kids.  Kids get into things and pets
get into things.  Sometimes it is real trouble.  Preventable accidents
are the number one cause of death and disability for pre-senior dogs
and cats.  You can save a person with CPR and you can save your pet
too!

Pet First Aid is the immediate care given to a pet that has been
injured or suddenly taken ill.  It does not replace vet care, it
enhances vet care.  60% of animal hospital visits are emergency in
nature and according to the American Animal Hospital Association
one out of four pets could be saved if just one Pet First Aid technique
was applied prior to getting veterinary treatment.  Knowing the skills
and techniques of Pet First Aid can mean the difference between life
and death, between temporary and permanent disability, between
expensive vet bills and reasonable home care and between rapid
recovery and long recuperation for your pet.

Learning the skills and techniques of Pet First Aid are best learned by
lecture, demonstration and hands-on-skill practice.  The skills and
techniques of Pet First Aid are similar to human first aid.  The key
differences are size, anatomy and communication.  These differences
come in to play when safely assessing and properly applying the skills
and techniques of Pet First Aid.

Being trained in Pet First Aid and CPR and keeping good records for
your pet’s health are some of the best things you can do to be
prepared for a medical emergency.  Pets cannot talk about how they
are feeling.  Being trained in Pet First Aid and CPR will allow you to
speak for the pets.

There is no doubt you and your pet will experience life with all the
ups and downs so being prepared and knowing first aid skills will
make the rough spots easier and smoother.
